Everything has changed

So… It would seem that everything in my life has changed since last time I wrote a post.

Firstly there’s the birth of my second daughter, Piper. She’s 10 weeks old now and developing more of a little personality by the day. Nicola and I are wrapped and Maddie loves having a sister. So welcome Piper.

Secondly there’s the new job. I’m now working for a great design agency in North Sydney called Synchromesh. It’s been fantastic to get back to working with a variety of really strong brands like BlackBerry, Lexmark, Trivett and heaps more. And the people are great.

Oh also in amongst all of this we decided to sell our house and buy a new one!!

So yeah. It’s been a big year. Bring on 2011!!

Tom Whalen and what inspires me…

Earlier today I was checking out Abduzeedo.com and saw this great post on Tom Whalen. I love this guy’s artwork and wanted to try to emulate some of his style.

This is just a quick test to try out some of the techniques such as half toning and the grungy texture in the background. Obviously this is no where near Tom’s work, he is a master of illustration and uses negative space brilliantly.

I am however pleased I was able to recreate the 50′s style mood and will be practicing this much more in the coming months.

One for the Facebook fans

Ok…so my big news is that I now have T-shirts for sale!! At the moment there are only 3 but I’m working on some more. T-shirt design is one of those things I’ve always wanted to do. What’s cooler than wearing, and seeing other people wear your own designs? I am in fact wearing my ‘HotChips’ T right now!

They are also available in a few other styles like long sleeve, girly fitted and even hoodie. (I can’t wait to get a hoodie of my next design)

Liane’s latest book “What Alice Forgot” has been recently optioned for a feature movie by Fox 2000. Her other novels are also great reads and if you’ve got kids, check out the “Space Brigade” series for some pre-teen fun (written under her other name: LM Moriarty).

Ok…even though I don’t think there is anyone reading this on a regular basis, I have decided I want to be one of those blog-like people. Everyday I read stuff on great design sites like Smashing Magazine, Photoshop VP: John Knack’s blog (I have a secret desire to create something worthy of getting posted on John Knack’s blog!) and John Hicks’ journal entries. I admire these people and find the stuff they post to be inspiring and just generally interesting. I want to be like that, I want people to read this blog and go “hey that’s pretty cool”

So my first step is to become a blogger. This means (at first at least) scheduling time to write what I’m thinking. From this week onwards…I…WILL….BLOG!!

Long time…no blog

Ok…so when I started this I intended it to be a resource for me and other for graphic software. Basically I only wanted informative how to style posts. Problem is I don’t get around to doing that often so I’m going to start just posting cool stuff I come across and random thoughts, with a graphical slant. (Having said that MOST things I think have a graphical slant so it shouldn’t be too hard!).

Hopefully I can get into the habit of posting more often.

Adobe has some cool stuff in the pipelines for instance this smart video manipulation. Hopefully this will come to Premiere or maybe even Photoshop in the not too distant future. Check out the video here

I love flash games and creative advertising. The other day while looking at the Movember site, I came across this mini site for Holden promoting their affiliation with Movember. I especially like the adaptation of their slogan “Go Better” to “Mo Better”!
